Some Love for the Coconut

Alright, so I love me some coconut. However, due to my fun-sucking food allergy, it can’t be just any coconut shreds, milk, or yogurt – it has to be organic and labeled as sulfite-free.

So when my sweet older sister took me on a Whole Foods shopping spree because she loves me 🙂 I hit up all my favorite coconut spots.

First, some emmy\’s organic dark cacao macaroons. Um, can we say bliss? Shout out to one of my favorite commenters, Heather – this is gluten-free, dairy-free, and certified vegan, made entirely raw ! As Emmy’s page describes these little chocolate balls of joy, “Fantastically intense, melt-in-your-mouth, brain awakening, dark chocolate macaroon! Our signature sweet for the chocolate connoisseur. Nutritionally rich & packed with antioxidants. This is guilt-free dessert heaven!”

Dark Cacao MacaroonsOh, and she gave us the scoop on why it’s certainly more than okay to pop two of these babies at once…“raw cacao (aka unprocessed chocolate) is high in magnesium, iron, calcium, zinc, potassium, protein, vit b1, b2, b5, b6, vit c & much more! Plus, it contains more antioxidants than green tea, blueberries and red wine!”

Anyway, the coconut was awesome and it was organic and sulfite free. Yay.

Next product I had to hit on, was some So Delicious coconut creamer for my morning cup of java, because honestly, it makes you feel like the Tropicana girl herself. No sulfites detected and the perfect pairing to your coffee. Seriously, people who drink their coffee black are missing out. Their products too are dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free, and certified vegan. They’re also loaded with the vegetarian-friendly vitamin B12 and kick some ass in the medium chain fatty acid department. Plus they are super formulated for maximum calcium absorption.

So, I’m not gonna lie – even with the chocolate macaroons in my cart, I had to get my hands on some more coconut sweets.

Continuing my love for So Delicious, I went right to the freezer section and while I really really wanted to grab a container of Purely Decadent Coconut Craze, I found soy  lecithin, an additive found in many everyday foods derived from soybean oil, listed in the ingredient list. I wasn’t too sure about it, so after some thorough research, (hey, I really want a container of that perched in my freezer), I found out that it rarely exceeds more than 1 percent of the weight of any food product. And that it is essentially an emulsifier in foods like candy bars, keeping the cocoa and cocoa butter from separating, so I actually think I’d have been okay. But don’t feel bad, I definitely picked up a container of Purely Decadent Purely Vanilla instead 🙂 For some reason vanilla always seems to be my safest option in the marisa-friendly department.

Anyway, it was a fab trip all-around. I even got some more Almond Butter. Anyone know more on soy lecithin? Do you eat So Delicious products? What are your favorites?

P & L,

Mem

  1. awwwww….thanks for the shout out!! so cool!!
    😀
i got some raw sulfite-free coconut shreds a while back and made some coconut butter out of it-so easy and so very yum.
i have to admit i haven’t tried any So Delicious coconut products. I always see them and try to convince myself to buy some, but I’m afraid I’d sit and eat the whole tub!
I don’t know much about soy lecithin, except I recently met a lady in Colorado who was allergic.
I sure hope you continue to be okay with it 🙂

    • 🙂 Mmm….I’ve never heard of coconut butter! That sounds so awesome though. I will definitely have to try that! Yeah, I was a little wary of the soy lecithin, so I was reluctant to give it a try. Poor lady that is allergic, I think it’s in a lot of products, including bagged tea. Crazy, crazy, crazy! Thanks for butter idea! 🙂

  2. Amanda/Izzie

So, not only do I totally adore the blogger herself, but I also LOVE whole foods and soy delicious. I can totally eat their ice cream and it honestly just makes me the happiest girl in the world. I love your blog MEM, I believe we should have an express date ASAP!

    • Izzie!! Thanks so much for the comment!!! 🙂 You are awesome. Whole Foods + So Delicious = Heavenly! So glad you agree!! 🙂 Express date + Whole Foods date + Mem/Izzie friendly ice cream date = Fun. Love me some food allergy friends 😉 xoxo

  3. I’ve tried the So Delicious coconut yogurt as well. It was just a tad sweet for my liking so I think i’ll stick with greek…. but I am sooooooo into trying this ice cream….looks amazingg!

    • Oh, I so agree. The yogurt is a sweet treat. I live for Greek yogurt and goat’s plain yogurt. Both are so incredible and easily dressed up on your own. You have to try the ice cream! The green tea flavor is great sprinkled with black raspberries and cashews with a drizzle of raw honey or agave nectar, but the vanilla is awesome all on its own. Let me know when you try them!

  4. My daughter is allergic to soy, but she enjoys Purely Decadent coconut milk ice cream all the time and doesn’t seem to have any reaction to it. I think that’s because there isn’t any soy protein in soy lecithin, and it’s the protein that most people have a sensitivity to. Their new So Delicious coconut milk ice cream flavors are insanely good. We have fallen in love with Cookies and Cream!

    • Oh no! I’m sorry to hear she is allergic to soy. I know a handful of people with that allergy and it’s a tough one to handle. So happy she can enjoy Purely Decadent coconut milk ice cream though! It’s great! Interesting tidbit on the lack of soy protein in soy lecithin. I didn’t know that! And oh my goodness, I’ll have to try the Cookies and Cream flavor! I haven’t seen that one yet! Thanks for sharing! 🙂 🙂 I’ll let you know how much I love it!!!

  5. Man, I hear you!!!
